Robert “Bob” Waldbauer graduated from Patchogue High School in 1940.  He was a member of the tennis team and sang in the school choir.  In addition, he was a member of the student council.

After graduation form Patchogue High School, Bob went on to Ohio University.  In 1942, Bob left the university and joined the Army Air Force.  In 1943, one week after marrying Marie Hemmel, he was sent to the China-Burma-India theater of operations in the Himalaya Mountains.  He flew 218 missions, carrying munitions and cargo to various army locations.  Honorably discharged in 1944, he received numerous honors and awards including: the Distinguished Flying Cross with two oak leaf clusters and the Air Medal with four clusters.

In civilian life, Bob went to work for TWA Airlines.  After a short while, Bob and Marie moved back to Patchogue in 1946 and started their family, having four children.  In 1952 he became a Patchogue Village Trustee.  Then, in 1960, he was elected Mayor of Patchogue.  He served in this position until 1976, completing such projects as: a new railroad station; Shorefront Park; downtown village parking lots and a new firehouse.  The Village Police Department was replaced by the Suffolk County Police.  These were just a sample of the many projects completed during Bob’s time in office.

Bob served as President of the Suffolk County Village Officials Association.  He was a field representative and Campaign Manager for Congressman Otis Pike for 24 years.  His reach extended outside of Suffolk County, serving on the Metropolitan Transit Authority Board of Directors for 12 years.  He served with numerous organizations helping to improve life for many.

Bob was a member of what many referred to as “The Greatest Generation”.  He was always looking to give of himself, whether it was to his family or his community.  He was extremely devoted to helping those who needed support.  Many of his accomplishments are still being enjoyed by the Patchogue community today.
