For Linda Tabatchnik, Patchogue is more than just a hometown; it is the community to which she has dedicated her life, her career, and her heart. A lifelong resident and a tireless volunteer, Linda has exemplified the spirit of Raider Pride through more than five decades of unwavering service, education, and civic leadership.

Linda’s roots in the district run deep. She attended Medford Elementary and graduated from Patchogue High School in 1963. Building upon the foundation laid by her local education, she earned her Bachelor’s Degree from Fairleigh Dickinson University and a Master’s Degree from New York University. These academic achievements launched a remarkable career in education. Linda served as an elementary school teacher in the Connetquot School District for 33 years, shaping the minds of countless young students. Her passion for the classroom didn’t end with retirement; she has continued to serve as a substitute teacher for an additional 25 years, marking over half a century of dedication to public education.

However, Linda’s impact extends far beyond the classroom walls. For 50 years, she has been a driving force within the Pilot Club of Patchogue, an international service organization that teaches leadership and service skills to high school students through the Anchor Program, recognizing the efforts of caregivers and teaching children about brain safety and health. Linda has served as President of the club and has held numerous officer and coordinator positions. Her fellow members have recognized her extraordinary commitment by naming her the club’s “Sweetheart” or “Ambassador,” an annual designation for those who go above and beyond in their service.

Linda’s work with the Pilot Club has brought tangible improvements to the quality of life in the Pat-Med community. She has been instrumental in securing grants to fund vital community projects such as the installation of adaptive swings for Shorefront Park, ensuring that children of all abilities can play safely. She has facilitated the donation of MP3 players to McPeaks Nursing Home and life-like therapy dolls and pets to the Medford Nursing Facility, bringing comfort to the elderly. She has also championed brain safety education by distributing brain awareness materials to the Patchogue-Medford Library and purchasing puppets for “BrainMinders,” a show that teaches youngsters how to protect their brains. Her commitment to community health is further evidenced by her leadership on the Long Island Community Hospital Advisory Council, where she served as president. She was a key organizer for the Hospice Committee’s annual fundraiser and the Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Health Awareness and Family Fun Day. Her impact on these events was best summarized by Carolyn Villegas, Coordinator of Outreach Services, who noted, “You are a very large part—in a small package—of why this event is so successful!”

Linda’s community service also encompasses her faith. A lifelong member of Temple Beth-El in Patchogue, she helps organize the “Nosh and Learn” interactive discussion series and leads the solemn observance of Holocaust Remembrance Day. In her earlier years, she served as a Water Safety Instructor with the American National Red Cross, teaching swimming for the Town of Brookhaven and at Camp Tabat in Blue Point.

From the classroom to the hospital board room, and from the synagogue to Shorefront Park, Linda Tabatchnik has spent a lifetime making Patchogue-Medford a safer, more inclusive, and more caring community in which to live.
